
Best Places to See Northern Lights Around the World
Seeing the northern lights in person is on nearly every adventurer’s bucket list. Yes, northern lights viewing can move as far south as Colorado, but those northern lights just aren’t the same as real, true, vibrant northern lights.
There are a few places in the world that are by far the best places to see the northern lights. If this is a bucket list item that you’ve been dreaming of, this is your article.

Best Time of Year to See the Northern Lights
The best time of year to see the northern lights is in the winter, specifically November – March. That being said, it is not impossible to see the northern lights in the summer, it’s just a rarer occurrence.
In addition, the northern lights aren’t a random occurrence. They are determined by solar flares from the sun, and there are certain years when solar flares are more common. That’s why many weather service stations are able to predict northern lights in specific regions based on the recent solar flare activities.
1. Iceland
Iceland is known as the land of fire & ice, but it’s also the land of the Northern Lights! The northern lights are so common here that there are winter tours completely dedicated to seeing them. It might be more difficult to road trip and take your Four Wheel Camper to Iceland, but we’re not sure you’d want to drive there in the winter, anyway!
2. Alaska
If looking for the ultimate road trip in your pop-up truck camper from Four Wheel Campers, a road trip to Alaska is a must. When you gp consider, staying into the fall or heading up there in the spring for the best chances to see the northern lights. It’s an incredible once-in-a-lifetime experience to watch the northern lights dance over your head in the night, and Alaska is the perfect opportunity to camp out under the stars and lights.

3. Canada
Canada and Alaska are very similar for viewing the northern lights, and both can be road-tripped in your Four Wheel Camper. That being said, this isn’t a trip you’d want to take in the winter with your RV or tent. That’s why we recommend our 4×4 pop-up truck camper for any adventure to see the northern lights in the winter in Canada. Trust me, you’ll need the 4wd, lightweight camper, and truck capabilities to view them safely!
4. Norway
If you’re up for an adventure across the pond, Norway is the perfect place to view the northern lights! The Lofoten Islands, located north of the Arctic Circle in Norway, is the perfect place to have a chance at catching the northern lights in the winter. Beyond the aurora borealis, the Lofoten Islands are stunning in many ways – from their towering mountains, iconic red cottages, and arctic beaches. Yes, you heard that right – Arctic beaches!

5. Finland
Finland is famous for its glass igloos north of the Arctic Circle that are often booked 12+ months in advance for viewing the northern lights. If that’s booked out – no worries! You can stay anywhere in northern Finland for a chance to see the northern lights from November – March. Many hotels will add you to a list for a ‘wake up’ if the northern lights are out, meaning you don’t have to stay up all night to try and catch them!
