Best U.S. Destinations for Fall Camping Trips
There’s something magical about camping in the fall — those mornings when you open up your Four Wheel Camper door to crisp air, colored leaves, and a fresh pot of coffee brewing in the background.
If you’re into cozy sweaters, colored tree canopies, and evenings around the campfire, it doesn’t get much better than these epic fall camping trips & destinations:

1. Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Tennessee & North Carolina
The Great Smoky Mountains are practically synonymous with fall beauty. From mid-October to early November, the rolling mountains burst into vibrant color, offering breathtaking scenic drives and hikes. Campgrounds like Elkmont and Cades Cove are popular options, offering easy access to trails and wildlife viewing. If you have the time, start your trip further north and drive the Blue Ridge Parkway through Virginia and North Carolina to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The best fall road trip!

2. Acadia National Park, Maine
For coastal beauty paired with iconic New England foliage, Acadia is a fall dream. Crisp sea air mixes with colorful forests along rugged shorelines. Blackwoods Campground offers a prime base to explore the park’s famous spots like Cadillac Mountain and Jordan Pond. In the evening, layer up and huddle around a cozy campfire. Truly one of the most magical fall camping destinations.
3. Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming
It might not be your first idea when it comes to fall camping trips, but don’t sleep on Yellowstone National Park in September or October! There might not be many fall colors here, but Yellowstone is magical in the fall for different reasons. The wildlife becomes a lot more active in the fall season, as they return to the lower valleys and prepare for winter. Additionally, crowds are much lighter in the later season, making it an extra-special time to visit. Research campground closing dates ahead of time, and be prepared for cold nights!

4. White Mountain National Forest, New Hampshire
For pure, classic fall foliage, it’s hard to beat the White Mountains. Think fiery red maples, misty mornings, and chilly nights perfect for campfires. Covered Bridge Campground and Hancock Campground are both excellent options for organized camping, but there are also endless options for dispersed camping all throughout White Mountains National Forest. Download one of our recommended apps to help find dispersed camping during your road trip.

5. Telluride, Colorado
Telluride is beautiful year-round, but the stunning golden Aspens make fall the best time to visit. From the moment you park your truck camper in the tiny town of Telluride, you’ll be awed by both the beauty and the color. Take the free gondola up to Mountain Village for panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. There isn’t much dispersed camping located in the valley, but there are plenty of options for organized camping, including Town Park or Mary E Campground.
6. Ozark National Forest, Arkansas
If you want spectacular fall color without the crowds of the Northeast, the Ozarks are a sleeper destination with a ton of great outdoor adventures. Mid to late October brings fiery hues to the forested mountains and rivers, with comfortable temperatures. Haw Creek Falls Recreation Area offers primitive camping near waterfalls, while Blanchard Springs has more developed sites.
7. Columbia River Gorge, Oregon
In the Pacific Northwest, the Columbia River Gorge puts on a stunning show of fall colors, made even more dramatic by its waterfalls and cliffs. The Ainsworth State Park Campground is an ideal home base, with quick access to famous hikes like Multnomah Falls. This season is also one of the best times to enjoy area hikes, with comfortable temperatures and lighter crowds.
8. Upper Peninsula, Michigan
The Upper Peninsula (or “U.P.”) offers one of the best-kept secrets for fall camping. Vast forests, waterfalls, and Lake Superior’s shoreline create jaw-dropping scenery with fewer tourists. Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park is famous for its fall foliage views, which typically peak around the second week of October. Get lost on one of the many forest service roads and find a secluded campsite under a canopy of bright yellow, red, and orange trees.

9. Shenandoah National Park, Virginia
Just 75 miles from Washington D.C., Shenandoah is an easy escape into a world of towering trees and winding roads like the stunning Skyline Drive. In October, the entire park turns into a painter’s palette of color. Because of its proximity to major urban areas, be sure to book well in advance if you plan to stay in an organized campground, as fall is a very popular time for visitors. Big Meadows Campground is a favorite for fall campers.
Tips for Fall Camping in Your Truck Camper
- Pack for variable weather: Fall days can be warm, but nights often dip into the chilly zone. Bring layers! If you have the quilted thermal layer in your FWC, that will help a lot on chilly nights!
- Reserve early if needed: If you are visiting popular fall tourist destinations, like the White Mountains or Shenandoah National Park, you’ll want to make campground reservations early.
- Check for campground closures: Some sites close for the season by mid-October, especially in National Park campgrounds like Acadia and Yellowstone. Check campground closing dates and nearby dispersed camping options.
- Leaf peeping timing varies: Foliage peaks vary by region and year — checking local fall color reports can help you time it perfectly.

Ready to Chase Fall Colors?
Fall camping is about slowing down, savoring the season, and embracing the cozy side of outdoor adventure. Whether you want sweeping mountain vistas, serene lakes, or forested hikes ablaze with color, the U.S. has a destination to match your autumn dreams.
