1. Power Up With Solar

Solar power is the backbone of most off grid setups. It allows you to recharge your batteries using the sun and so you do not need campground hookups or engine idling to keep systems functioning. With solar, your lights, refrigerator, fans, and charging ports in our truck campers continue working while you camp in remote locations.

In addition to Solar charging, Four Wheel Campers offers DC to DC charging. Meaning your lithium camper batteries will be charged by your trucks battery/alternator while driving. This connection is part of your install when you purchase a camper or topper equipped with a lithium battery.

2. Batteries and Power Management

Increase Battery Capacity

Four Wheel Campers come solar-ready, and classic slide-ins, base campers, campout models, and flatbeds come with one lithium battery standard. Many off grid travelers choose to increase battery capacity by opting for additional lithium batteries. Larger battery banks store more energy, allowing you to stay off grid longer.

Inverters for AC Power

Most systems inside a camper operate on 12V DC power. However, some electronics require regular household AC power. In that case, an inverter converts battery power to usable AC energy so you can charge laptops or run small appliances while off grid. Several Four Wheel Camper models offer optional inverters so that you can still use regular AC power appliances without needing to be plugged into shore power.

Monitor Your Power Use

Power monitoring systems help track incoming solar charge and real time battery levels. Knowing how much electricity you are using helps prevent accidental depletion when camping far from services.

3. Water

Four Wheel Campers slide-in, campout, and flatbed campers include on board fresh water storage. Fresh water capacity ranges from 11 gallons to 40 gallons, which supports drinking, cooking, and basic washing. This built-in supply is a really nice feature to have for off-grid trips.

For longer trips or desert environments, additional storage is almost always recommended. People often bring: 

• Extra jugs or containers
  
• Jerry cans
  
• Collapsible water bladders
  

Carrying a water filter or purification tablets allows you to safely use natural water sources when available. Remember, when planning to camp off the grid, you should always overestimate how much water you will need. Running out of water is one of the worst-case camping scenarios! 

4. Appliances and Comfort Off Grid

• Refrigeration: Many Four Wheel Camper models offer refrigerators powered by solar charged batteries. This eliminates ice runs and keeps food fresh in warm climates. If you get a base model or truck topper like the Project M, you can easily add your own portable refrigerator or cooler to your setup. 
• Lighting: Interior LED lighting and exterior flood lights improve safety and comfort after dark while drawing minimal power.
• Cooking: Built in stoves and cook systems allow full meal preparation off-grid without campfire dependence or power hookups. There are also plenty of additional cooking stoves available on places like Amazon or Walmart, like the Coleman one-burner stove. 

5. Additional recommended items 

Beyond some of the most well-known items like solar & water, there are a few more niche items you should never go camp off-grid without. These items are less about efficiency and power, and more about preparedness, as camping off-grid many times being in remote environments. 

• Traction mats: If you experience mud, sand, or snow, traction mats can be the difference between a minor and major inconvenience. 
• Air compressor: especially if you plan on overlanding, an air compressor is essential for deflating/inflating tires for different terrain. 
• Collapsible camping shovel: An easy add to your off-grid setup, that is essential for everything from digging fire pits to going to the bathroom. 
• Bear spray: Whether camping in grizzly or black bear country, bear spray is always a smart thing to have stored in your camp setup. 
• First aid kit: An easy item to forget, but something that should never leave your camper!
