When it comes to elk hunting, hunters typically apply for tags in the spring, and hunts take place throughout the fall. Each state has it’s own tag lottery, permit requirements, and strict laws around elk hunting, so be sure you research based on what specific place you’re looking to hunt!

The Best States for Elk Hunting

1. Colorado

Colorado is renowned for its large elk population and diverse hunting opportunities. The state offers both draw and OTC tags, making it accessible for hunters who may not have accumulated preference points. The variety of seasons and the wide accessibility and availability of public land make Colorado a prime destination for elk hunters.

Season:

  • Archery: Early September to late September
  • Muzzleloader: Mid-September
  • Rifle: Multiple seasons from early October to mid-November

Tag Application Period:

  • Primary Draw: Application deadline is usually in early April.
  • Over-the-Counter (OTC) Tags: Available for some seasons, particularly second and third rifle seasons.

Additional Regulations:

  • Hunter Education: Required for hunters born on or after January 1, 1949.
  • Habitat Stamp: Must be purchased annually before hunting.

2. Montana

Montana offers expansive wilderness and a healthy elk population, making it perhaps THE best state for elk hunting. The state’s general season tags are highly sought after, and special permits can provide access to prime hunting areas. It is Big Sky country, and there is truly no experience like harvesting an elk in the wilds of Montana. Many of Montana’s best elk hunting locations are remote, making is the perfect hunting trip in a 4×4 truck camper. Don’t forget your bear spray!

  • Archery: Early September to mid-October
  • Rifle: Late October to late November

Tag Application Period:

  • General Season Elk Tags: Applications are due by April 1.
  • Special Permits: Application deadline is also April 1.

Additional Regulations:

  • Hunter Education: Required for hunters born after January 1, 1985.
  • Conservation License: Necessary for all hunters.
  • Bow and Arrow License: Required for archery hunting.

3. Wyoming
