Truck Overland Campers: How To Design Your Perfect Rig
Designing your perfect rig isn’t about picking something off a lot. It’s about building a truck overland camper that fits how you travel. Whether you’re chasing remote trailheads, living out of your rig for weeks at a time, or just upgrading your weekend setup, we walk you through it step by step.
Here at Four Wheel Campers, we’ve spent decades dialing in what makes a truck camper truly capable, and you get to take that foundation and make it your own.
Here’s exactly how I’d guide you through building your ideal Four Wheel Camper using our online build tool.

1. Start With Your Truck and Bed Size
Everything begins with your truck. Before you even think about layouts or add-ons, you need to make sure your camper and truck are perfectly matched. Your answers here determine the direction of your entire build! Ask yourself:
- What truck are you driving (or planning to buy)?
- What bed length do you have? Short bed or long bed?
- Are you sticking with a pickup bed or going flatbed?
Your truck make, model, and bed size will determine your truck camper model options. Here is a quick breakdown of our camper models available for specific trucks:
- Swift and Fleet: Designed for mid-size trucks, these are compact, lightweight slide in truck campers that are easy to handle and perfect for nimble travel.
- Raven, Hawk, and Grandby: Built for full-size trucks, these models correspond to different bed lengths and offer more interior space and storage for extended trips.
- Flatbed versions: Many of the core models are also available as flatbed campers, giving you a wider layout, more storage options, and a more integrated overland setup.
- CampOut series: A simplified, modular version of a truck camper that strips things down to the essentials while still offering flexibility that is available for both mid-size and full-size truck options.
- Project M: A minimalist pop-up topper that keeps your truck bed usable while adding a lightweight sleeping and shelter solution. Available for all bed truck sizes.

2. Pick Your Camper Model
Slide-in campers are our most common truck camper option, offering functional flexibility and comfort on a wide range of adventures. If you’re building something more expedition-style, flatbed campers open up more storage, better weight distribution, and long-term living solutions. If you’re into minimalist & lightweight, the Project M might be your perfect rig.
Slide-in truck campers are the most traditional and fully equipped option. These campers slide directly into your truck bed and replace your tailgate, creating a fully enclosed living space with built-in systems like a kitchen, water storage, and power. Because they’re enclosed, they offer better insulation and protection from the elements, which makes them ideal for four-season travel and longer trips. If you’re looking for comfort, convenience, and a ready-to-go setup, this is usually where people start.
Flatbed campers take that same concept and expand on it. Instead of sitting inside a standard truck bed, they’re mounted on a flatbed tray, which gives you a wider footprint and more usable space inside the camper. You also gain additional exterior storage along the sides of the flatbed, which is a big advantage for overland travel where gear organization matters. Flatbed campers are typically the choice for people building more permanent, expedition-style rigs or planning long-term travel.
The Project M truck topper sits on the opposite end of the spectrum. It’s a lightweight pop-up topper that mounts to your truck bed rails and uses your existing truck bed as the interior space. That means you keep full use of your truck bed and can load it however you want, making it one of the most flexible and minimalist options available. It’s significantly lighter and more modular, but it comes with fewer built-in features compared to a full slide-in camper.

3. Customize Your Build (This Is Where It Gets Good!)
Now comes the best part…turning the camper into your camper!
Our build tool lets you go beyond the base model and create something tailored to your travel style. This isn’t about adding random features; it’s about building a system that works together for your needs. Here is an example of all of the standard and add on features for our Hawk slide in camper.
1. Start With the Essentials
Every Four Wheel Camper comes with thoughtfully designed standard features, but you’ll quickly see where you can expand. This is where you decide how self-sufficient you want to be. Start with the most essential customizable features:
- Power systems
- Water systems
- Heating and cooling
- Interior layouts
2. Smart Power Upgrades
If you’re planning to get off-grid, your power setup matters. A strong electrical setup turns your truck overland camper from a weekend rig into something you can live out of comfortably. Some of the most popular upgrades our FWC users choose are:
- Lithium battery systems for longer runtimes
- Solar panels for extended trips
- Upgraded chargers and monitoring systems
3. Add Proven Custom Mods
After the essentials and power systems, it’s time for the accessories. We have endless accessories to add to your customizable truck camper, but these are just a few of our favorites:
- Awning systems for instant shade and shelter
- Exterior lighting upgrades for camp setup and night visibility
- Thermal pack to keep the cold and heat out
- Internal roof lifter actuator for hands-free setup and take-down
- Roof rack for all your adventure gear
- Axe and shovel expedition kit for overlanding adventure
- Roof fans for ultimate comfort and airflow

Start Building Your Customizable Truck Camper
This is where everything comes together. Once you’ve chosen your truck, picked your camper model, and decided between a slide-in, flatbed, or Project M, it’s time to start building your rig using our online builder!
When you walk through the build tool, treat it like you’re planning a real trip, not just checking boxes. The process is straightforward, but every decision you make shapes how your truck camper performs in the real world. You’ll start by confirming your truck and bed size, which ensures everything is properly matched. From there, you’ll select your camper model and begin customizing your setup based on how you actually plan to travel. And once your build is complete, the adventure is just beginning!
