POPUP LIFE – Episode 1

Four Wheel Campers and Fat Tire teamed up to create a short video series on what it’s like to live off the grid and unplugged. This five-week tour spans from California to Colorado and features a group of like-minded adventurers and athletes who strive to live more sustainably and help protect the public lands that we all love.

Follow along every week for the next five weeks as the trip progresses and guests transition from rock climbers, skateboarders, snowboarders, and other outdoor activists, and learn what it means to live the pop-up life.

00:02
i lived in my self-made camper for three
00:05
years searching for a more sustainable
00:07
lifestyle
00:10
join us as we continue this pursuit of
00:14
living
00:16
i’m ryan brown and i’m getting out of
00:18
town
00:18
[Music]
00:22
this is pop-up life
00:42
foreign
00:44
it’s crazy sitting here next to the
00:47
snake river outside
00:48
jackson for the third time
00:53
growing up in missouri i never thought
00:55
i’d ever see or experience the things i
00:58
have the past 10 years
00:59
let alone the past two weeks
01:04
california the august complex fire has
01:06
become the largest fire in state history
01:09
to give you some sense of the size of
01:11
this there is 1 000
01:13
acres burning every 30 smoke from dozens
01:16
of major fires
01:17
has drifted all the way across the
01:19
country overnight the governor there
01:21
declaring a state of emergency
01:34
[Music]
01:41
we hit the road with four-wheel campers
01:43
and fat tire
01:44
to learn and share about living
01:46
unplugged and off-grid
01:50
the start of this trip has been a roller
01:52
coaster the fires and smoke have made us
01:55
have to change plans on the go
01:59
luckily these rigs allow and empower
02:02
these last minute changes
02:06
hopefully the smoke clears up when we
02:08
get to mona
02:18
i’ve known of donner summit for a really
02:20
long time the
02:22
climbing there is quite historic there’s
02:24
one route in particular that i was
02:26
really excited to try
02:27
uh pump lust i’ve heard about it forever
02:30
and
02:30
you know we’re on a bit of a tight time
02:32
schedule so
02:34
i had an opportunity to give it kind of
02:35
like one good effort and i’m
02:37
really happy with the way it went
02:41
wow god
02:50
climb with jess who’s another four-wheel
02:52
clamper owner
02:53
and total badass in and of herself so
02:55
it’s really fun to share some
02:57
catches with her and do some climbing
03:08
[Music]
03:14
[Music]
03:21
the smoke is pretty crazy definitely
03:23
here in tahoe right now
03:26
it was an interesting time staying in
03:28
the parking lot with ash and smoke
03:30
everywhere from the fires
03:34
living in smoke from the fires at home
03:36
in colorado and now
03:38
on this trip hasn’t been the best
03:42
but it makes me feel even more for the
03:44
people whose homes and towns have been
03:46
directly affected
03:50
driving down toward mono lake was the
03:52
thickest smoke i’ve ever been in
03:54
the sky is darkened and had a deep
03:56
orange glow all around
03:58
with very limited visibility what
04:01
where are we we’re in mars or
04:05
it was wild so wild
04:10
we literally drove into the apocalypse
04:12
it just kept getting darker and
04:14
darker and darker it was nuts what time
04:16
is it
04:17
it is not even 5 p.m
04:20
it should be clear skies right now
04:25
and it looks like it’s maybe
04:28
eight it’s nuts it’s really crazy
04:33
what’s our plan here
04:36
well let’s go get danny’s teepee you
04:38
want to come help us get the tv sure
04:40
yeah the tp days got some stew stuff
04:44
all right we’re gonna grab the pot take
04:47
the teepee down
04:48
head out see you guys in the field
05:05
so unfortunately for the fire apocalypse
05:08
jonathan and jessica didn’t get to come
05:11
hang out
05:12
in camp mono because we had to evacuate
05:15
the area
05:16
we all had to climb up on these big rigs
05:18
and head out a few hours east
05:21
so the good thing is i brought all the
05:24
stew material with me
05:26
today we are going to make a pork
05:29
tenderloin fat tire
05:32
stew
05:33
[Music]
05:36
um
05:39
[Music]
05:44
you gotta measure your ingredients when
05:45
you when it cooks you’re gonna
05:48
this one calls for about half a fat tire
05:56
that’s pretty good right about there
06:04
okay i messed up on this one i have to
06:07
drink this one and then
06:09
we’ll do a half of the next one
06:14
one whole onion and there you have it
06:18
the pork tenderloin brew stew
06:21
[Music]
06:26
oh wow so good this guy can make some
06:30
stew what’s going on bud just got her a
06:34
little stuck
06:36
don’t punch it too fast in the desert
06:38
we’re trying to take off quick
06:40
because you’ll sink
06:43
what an adventure it’s been fleeing the
06:46
smoke
06:46
finding places to park in the dark
06:48
getting stuck leaving
06:50
and discovering it wasn’t a proper place
06:52
to camp
06:54
i’m excited to continue learning and see
06:56
what the road has to offer
07:04
[Music]
07:12
