Where to Catch Salmon in The United States
A day spent catching salmon is always considered a great day for anglers. And although Alaska is famous for its salmon fishing, there are many places in the United States that offer world-class salmon fishing. If you’ve been looking to plan that picture-perfect salmon fishing trip in your Four Wheel Camper, we’ve got all the best recommendations for you! Here’s a guide to some of the best spots across the country.
1. Alaska
This one shouldn’t surprise anyone! When it comes to salmon fishing, Alaska is unparalleled. With its vast wilderness and pristine waters, it’s a haven for salmon enthusiasts. A road trip up to Alaska in your pop up truck camper is a once-in-a-lifetime trip we always recommend.
- Kenai River: Known for its giant King Salmon, the Kenai River is a must-visit. The river’s runs include Chinook, Sockeye, Coho, and Pink Salmon, making it a diverse fishing spot.
- Bristol Bay: Famous for its Sockeye Salmon runs, Bristol Bay offers an unforgettable fishing experience. The remote location adds to the adventure, making it perfect for those with a rugged camper setup.
- Kodiak Island: This island provides excellent opportunities for both freshwater and saltwater salmon fishing. The variety and abundance of salmon here attract anglers from all over the world.
2. Pacific Northwest
The Pacific Northwest, particularly Washington and Oregon, is renowned for its salmon fishing. The region’s rivers and coastal waters are teeming with these sought-after fish.
- Columbia River: Stretching between Oregon and Washington, the Columbia River is one of the premier spots for salmon fishing. It’s famous for its Chinook and Coho Salmon runs, which draw anglers during peak seasons.
- Puget Sound: Located in Washington, Puget Sound offers diverse salmon fishing opportunities. Whether fishing from a boat or the shoreline, you can catch Chinook, Coho, and Pink Salmon.
- Rogue River: In Oregon, the Rogue River is well known for its strong Chinook and Coho Salmon runs. There are some great camping spots for your pop up camper in the region as well. We recommend the River Bridge Campground near Prospect, Oregon.
3. Great Lakes Region
Contrary to popular belief, you don’t have to be near the ocean to catch salmon! The Great Lakes region offers exceptional salmon fishing, particularly in Michigan and Wisconsin.
- Lake Michigan: Both the lake and its tributaries are prime spots for salmon fishing. The state of Michigan stocks the lake with Chinook and Coho Salmon. Salmon fishing on Lake Michigan in the summer is unmatched.
- Lake Superior: Known for its clear, cold waters, Lake Superior supports healthy populations of Chinook, Coho, and Pink Salmon. The lake’s rugged coastline is ideal for a scenic camping trip and setting up your truck camper along the shoreline. We recommend Little Girls Point near Ironwood.
- Milwaukee River: Flowing into Lake Michigan, the Milwaukee River is a hotspot for Chinook and Coho Salmon. The fall runs are especially popular with local anglers.
4. Northeast
The Northeast might not be the first region that comes to mind for salmon fishing, but it offers some unique and historic spots, particularly in Maine and New York.
- Penobscot River: In Maine, the Penobscot River is known for its Atlantic Salmon. While the population has diminished, efforts to restore the salmon runs have made it a significant spot for anglers.
- Salmon River: It’s right in the name! Located in New York, the Salmon River is famous for its Chinook and Coho Salmon runs. The river’s fall season attracts thousands of anglers seeking to catch these magnificent fish.
